Project Overview
Oviedo High School in Oviedo, Florida is a 400,000-square-foot campus with classrooms, offices, a gymnasium, dining hall, kitchen, auditorium, automotive workshop, and ancillary spaces. BEED Engineering provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design and project administration for renovations to that campus.
A high school of this size is a small district energy plant as much as it is a school. Four 300-ton centrifugal water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, and primary-secondary pumping serve the renovated floor area.
The Challenge
Classrooms, a gym, an auditorium, a kitchen, and an automotive workshop do not share one HVAC profile. The renovated plant had to cool all of them and still serve kitchen grease waste, hood exhaust, and vehicle exhaust in the shop.
The design had to:
- Provide four 300-ton centrifugal water-cooled chillers with primary-secondary pumping and cooling towers
- Serve occupied spaces with variable air volume air-handling units and pressure-independent air terminals
- Include HVAC controls, kitchen hood exhaust, grease traps, and vehicle exhaust
- Specify water-efficient plumbing fixtures and high-efficiency instant gas-fired water heaters
BEED Engineering's Scope
BEED provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design and project administration. Electrical engineering was not listed as part of this assignment.
Engineering Solutions
The water-cooled plant uses four 300-ton centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and primary-secondary chilled-water pumping. Variable air volume air-handling units with pressure-independent terminals distribute cooling to classrooms, offices, gym, dining, auditorium, and related spaces. HVAC controls coordinate that plant.
Kitchen hood exhaust and grease traps serve dining and food service. Vehicle exhaust serves the automotive workshop. Water-efficient plumbing fixtures and instant gas-fired water heaters complete the plumbing design for the renovated 400,000-square-foot campus.

What Is a Chilled Water System?
A chilled water system uses a chiller to cool water that is pumped to air-handling units and other coils, then returned to the plant to be cooled again.
How Does a Chilled Water System Work?
Chilled water absorbs heat at building coils, returns to the chiller, rejects that heat at a cooling tower or air-cooled condenser, and is pumped back out as cold supply water.
What Is HVAC Engineering?
HVAC engineering is the design of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems that control temperature, humidity, ventilation, and indoor air quality.
What Is Plumbing Engineering?
Plumbing engineering is the design of domestic water, sanitary waste, storm drainage, and specialty piping systems for buildings.
