Project Overview
Holly Hill Middle School in Holly Hill, Florida received a 53,345-square-foot addition. BEED Engineering provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design for the addition. The project was designed to a USGBC LEED Silver rating.
A school addition has to cool classrooms without treating the new wing as a separate building. Energy recovery, demand-based ventilation, and low-flow plumbing were part of the same assignment that produced the LEED Silver systems list.
The Challenge
The addition needed a packaged chilled-water plant, energy recovery, and ventilation that could follow occupancy instead of running at a fixed outdoor-air rate.
The design had to:
- Provide an air-cooled packaged chiller plant
- Include fixed-plate energy recovery units and variable air volume air-handling units
- Provide HVAC controls and demand-based ventilation control
- Specify low-flow water-saving plumbing fixtures
BEED Engineering's Scope
BEED provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design for the Holly Hill addition. Electrical engineering and commissioning were not listed as part of this assignment.
Engineering Solutions
An air-cooled packaged chiller plant serves the 53,345-square-foot addition. Fixed-plate energy recovery units and variable air volume air-handling units condition the occupied spaces. HVAC controls include demand-based ventilation so outdoor air follows occupancy. Low-flow plumbing fixtures complete the water-efficiency side of the LEED Silver systems list.

Related Resources
What Is a Chilled Water System?
A chilled water system uses a chiller to cool water that is pumped to air-handling units and other coils, then returned to the plant to be cooled again.
What Is HVAC Engineering?
HVAC engineering is the design of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems that control temperature, humidity, ventilation, and indoor air quality.
What Is Building Automation?
Building automation is the control system that starts, stops, sequences, and monitors HVAC and related equipment so a building operates as designed.
What Is Plumbing Engineering?
Plumbing engineering is the design of domestic water, sanitary waste, storm drainage, and specialty piping systems for buildings.
