Project Overview

Lake Nona Middle School at 13700 Narcoossee Road in Orlando, Florida is a 112,000-square-foot education building with classrooms, offices, a gym, dining hall, kitchen, auditorium, and ancillary spaces. BEED Engineering provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design and project administration.

A middle school of this size needs a central cooling plant, kitchen exhaust, and — in Central Florida — a ventilation sequence that can support hurricane-shelter use. Ice storage was part of the chilled-water plant, which shifts cooling production away from the peak electrical window.

The Challenge

Classrooms, a gym, an auditorium, and a kitchen do not share one HVAC profile. The plant has to cool all of them, hold humidity in Orlando, and still have a shelter ventilation mode when the building is used that way.

The design had to:

  • Provide air-cooled chillers, variable-flow chilled-water pumps, and ice storage tanks
  • Serve the occupied spaces with variable air volume air-handling units and HVAC controls
  • Include hurricane-shelter ventilation
  • Provide kitchen hood exhaust, grease traps, water-efficient plumbing fixtures, and gas-fired water heaters

BEED Engineering's Scope

BEED provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design and project administration for the Lake Nona campus. Electrical engineering was not listed as part of this assignment.

Engineering Solutions

Air-cooled chillers and variable-flow chilled-water pumps serve the building. Ice storage tanks allow cooling to be made and stored off-peak, then used when occupancy and outdoor temperature rise. Variable air volume air-handling units and HVAC controls distribute that cooling to classrooms, offices, gym, dining, and auditorium spaces.

Hurricane-shelter ventilation is included so the school can be used as a shelter without relying on the normal classroom outdoor-air sequence alone. Kitchen hood exhaust and grease traps serve the dining and kitchen areas. Water-efficient plumbing fixtures and gas-fired water heaters complete the plumbing design.

The public face of that work is the Lake Nona Middle School campus in southeast Orlando.
