Honda of Palm Bay

Project Overview

Honda of Palm Bay is a 4,400-square-foot dealership building in Palm Bay, Florida, with offices, a sales area, and a car repair shop. BEED Engineering provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design.

A dealership puts customer-facing sales space next to a repair shop. Those rooms do not share the same cooling, ventilation, or plumbing loads, and the mechanical and plumbing design has to serve both without treating the building as a generic retail box.

The Challenge

Automotive sales and service occupy the same small floor plate. Offices and the sales floor need comfort cooling. The repair shop needs mechanical systems that can operate with shop activity. Plumbing has to serve both public and service uses efficiently.

The design had to:

• Provide split air-conditioning systems for the mixed occupancy
• Include HVAC controls so sales, office, and shop areas can be operated as one building
• Specify water-efficient plumbing fixtures and instant hot water heaters

Electrical engineering was not listed as part of this assignment.

BEED Engineering's Scope

BEED provided mechanical and plumbing engineering design, including:

• Mechanical engineering for split air-conditioning systems and HVAC controls
• Plumbing engineering for water-efficient fixtures and instant hot water heaters

Engineering Solutions

Split air-conditioning systems condition the 4,400-square-foot building. HVAC controls coordinate those systems across offices, sales, and the repair shop. Water-efficient plumbing fixtures and instant hot water heaters serve the occupied spaces without a large central water-heating plant.

The result is a Palm Bay automotive building whose mechanical and plumbing systems match dealership use — sales in front, service alongside — rather than a one-zone retail HVAC layout.
