Project Overview
Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa, Florida required a dedicated exhaust system for an isolation room on the third floor. BEED Engineering provided mechanical and electrical engineering design services for that system.
Isolation-room exhaust is a specialized healthcare HVAC assignment. The room has to hold the pressure relationship the occupancy requires, and the exhaust path has to be dedicated rather than mixed into general return.
The Challenge
A third-floor isolation room in an operating hospital cannot borrow general exhaust and call it isolation. The design had to provide a dedicated exhaust system and the electrical service that system required.
The design had to:
- Provide dedicated exhaust for the third-floor isolation room
- Include the electrical engineering needed to serve that exhaust equipment
BEED Engineering's Scope
BEED provided mechanical and electrical engineering design. Plumbing engineering was not listed as part of this assignment.
Engineering Solutions
The mechanical design provided a dedicated exhaust system for the isolation room. Electrical design served that equipment. The work sits on the same Cape Canaveral Hospital campus as BEED’s Women’s Center MEP replacements, as a separate isolation-exhaust assignment rather than a full-floor renovation.

What Is HVAC Engineering?
HVAC engineering is the design of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems that control temperature, humidity, ventilation, and indoor air quality.
What Is MEP Engineering?
MEP engineering is the coordinated design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems that make a building usable, safe, and efficient.
Do I Need an Engineer for a Commercial Renovation?
Many commercial renovations need an MEP engineer when HVAC, electrical, plumbing, occupancy, or life-safety systems change—or when sealed drawings are required for permit.
What Is Commercial Electrical Engineering?
Commercial electrical engineering is the design of power, lighting, emergency systems, and fire alarm infrastructure for non-residential buildings.
