Project Overview
The Payload Processing Facility East SMAG at SpaceX in Cape Canaveral, Florida comprises a 6,400-square-foot IUS cleanroom, a 1,764-square-foot airlock, and ancillary spaces. BEED Engineering provided a study to evaluate the existing HVAC system and determine the extent of upgrade required to achieve ISO 8 cleanroom conditions in the 6,400-square-foot, 140-foot high bay.
This assignment was a study, not a full mechanical redesign or construction package.
The Challenge
A 140-foot high bay is not a standard cleanroom. Existing water-cooled chillers, air-handling units, humidifiers, and pneumatic controls have to be evaluated against ISO 8 before anyone sizes a replacement plant.
The study had to:
- Evaluate the existing HVAC system serving the high bay and airlock
- Determine the upgrades required to achieve ISO 8 cleanroom conditions in the 6,400-square-foot, 140-foot high bay
BEED Engineering's Scope
BEED provided a mechanical HVAC study. The published scope does not include electrical design, plumbing design, or a sealed construction set for a new cleanroom plant.
Engineering Solutions
The study reviewed the existing mechanical plant: water-cooled chillers, cooling towers, chilled-water pumps, air-handling units, humidifiers, ductwork, chilled-water piping, boilers, and pneumatic controls. The deliverable was an evaluation of how far that plant would have to be upgraded to support ISO 8 in the high bay — a facility assessment of an aerospace payload-processing space in Brevard County, not a claim that BEED designed a new SpaceX cleanroom.

What Is a Facility Assessment?
A facility assessment is an engineering review of existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to document condition, remaining life, and recommended work.
What Is HVAC Engineering?
HVAC engineering is the design of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems that control temperature, humidity, ventilation, and indoor air quality.
What Is a Chilled Water System?
A chilled water system uses a chiller to cool water that is pumped to air-handling units and other coils, then returned to the plant to be cooled again.
How Do You Control Humidity in a Commercial Building?
Commercial humidity control depends on dehumidification at the cooling coil, proper outdoor-air treatment, runtime, and controls—not just a lower thermostat setpoint.
