Project Overview
The FPL Data Center in Daytona, Florida is an 8,000-square-foot facility with computer rooms, network rooms, a UPS room, meeting rooms, and support spaces. BEED Engineering provided mechanical engineering design.
A data hall is not a typical office HVAC job. Equipment density, aisle containment, and a clean-agent fire suppression system have to work together in a small footprint.
The Challenge
Computer and network rooms need cooling at the rack, not at the thermostat. Raised-floor supply, hot-aisle and cold-aisle arrangement, and a suppression system that does not depend on water in the equipment space were part of the same mechanical assignment.
The design had to:
- Provide a packaged HVAC system
- Use pressurized raised floors with hot-aisle and cold-aisle layout
- Include exhaust systems and HVAC controls
- Include an FM-200 fire suppression system
BEED Engineering's Scope
BEED provided mechanical engineering design. Electrical and plumbing engineering were not listed as part of this assignment.
Engineering Solutions
Packaged HVAC serves the 8,000-square-foot data center. Pressurized raised floors deliver supply air into cold aisles, with hot aisles carrying return from the equipment. Exhaust systems and HVAC controls complete the mechanical sequence. FM-200 fire suppression is included for the equipment spaces rather than a water-based system in the computer rooms.

What Is HVAC Engineering?
HVAC engineering is the design of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems that control temperature, humidity, ventilation, and indoor air quality.
What Is MEP Engineering?
MEP engineering is the coordinated design of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems that make a building usable, safe, and efficient.
What Is Building Automation?
Building automation is the control system that starts, stops, sequences, and monitors HVAC and related equipment so a building operates as designed.
What Is Emergency Power?
Emergency power is the legally required backup source that keeps life-safety and other designated loads operating when normal utility power is lost.
