What the engineer does during design

During design, the MEP engineer typically:

  • Reviews the architectural program, occupancy, and code path
  • Calculates heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical loads
  • Selects major equipment and distribution strategies
  • Coordinates with architecture and structure for shafts, ceiling space, and equipment rooms
  • Produces drawings and specifications
  • Identifies energy, indoor air quality, and maintainability tradeoffs

For mechanical systems, that may include HVAC and chilled water design. Electrical work may include power distribution and emergency power. Plumbing work may include domestic water, sanitary, storm, and specialty gases.

What the engineer does during construction

After documents are issued, the engineer usually:

  • Reviews equipment and product submittals
  • Answers RFIs
  • Observes installation at agreed intervals
  • Helps resolve field conflicts
  • Supports commissioning when it is part of the project
  • Participates in substantial completion and punch-list review
